Flamstead Village School

Geography

Intent

At Flamstead Village School, we aim to spark curiosity and a lasting interest in the world around us. Our Geography curriculum encourages pupils to ask questions, explore places and environments, and think like geographers. Through high-quality teaching, pupils build upon prior knowledge and develop key geographical skills as they progress through the school.

Geography is taught both as a discrete subject and through cross-curricular links, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections in their learning. Children develop an understanding of place, space, and environmental processes, as well as the relationships between people and their environments.

We provide a range of engaging learning opportunities, including enrichment activities and trips, to deepen understanding and bring learning to life. Our curriculum promotes the use of geographical enquiry, allowing pupils to investigate, interpret evidence, and develop critical and analytical thinking skills.

Implementation

Geography is taught in blocks throughout the year to allow pupils to develop depth in their learning. Knowledge and skills are carefully sequenced to ensure progression across year groups, enabling pupils to build a secure understanding of both human and physical geography.

By the end of Year 6, pupils will have a strong understanding of the UK and the wider world. They will be able to compare different locations, understand key geographical processes, and relate learning to their own experiences.

Planning is aligned with the National Curriculum and adapted to ensure all pupils make progress from their starting points. Opportunities for fieldwork, map work, and the use of geographical vocabulary are embedded throughout.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children begin to develop their understanding of the world through the area of learning: Understanding the World. This provides the foundation for future geographical learning.

Enrichment opportunities, including trips and visitors, are used to enhance and contextualise learning.

Impact

The impact of our Geography curriculum is demonstrated through pupils' increasing knowledge, skills and confidence as geographers. Progression is evident across EYFS and Key Stages, with pupils able to recall and apply their learning.

We measure impact through:

  • Celebration of learning each term (e.g., class assemblies)
  • Pupil Voice and discussions about learning
  • Engagement in enrichment opportunities, including trips and outdoor learning
  • Ongoing and summative assessment of knowledge and skills

Pupils leave Flamstead Village School with a strong understanding of the world, an ability to think critically about geographical issues, and a curiosity to explore further.
